AbdulAziz Almutairi

Assistant Professor at KFUPM


During his PhD, Abdulaziz focused on exploring heterostructures based on two-dimensional (2D) materials, including both 2D/2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures and 2D/native oxide heterostructures, for applications in low-power electronics. His research delved into the interface effects on charge transfer within 2D/2D vdW heterostructures and examined the impact of oxidation processes on the properties of 2D/native oxide heterostructures. Notably, he demonstrated memristive switching in GaS/GaSxOy heterostructures formed through oxygen plasma oxidation. 


Abdulaziz is currently an assistant professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia.

Ernestine Hui

UK Civil Service Fast Stream


During her PhD, Ernestine focused on using graphene to investigate neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Her research demonstrated that graphene can be used to create transparent microelectrode arrays that allow for super-resolution microscopy of neurons, and the simultaneous electrophysiological recordings and calcium imaging of neurons. Notably, her work demonstrated that when U18666A was introduced into neurons to mimic Niemann-Pick’s disease type C, a loss of network and individual neuron synchronicity was observed, alongside a change in the morphology of the synapses leading to a loss in neuronal signalling capacity. This demonstrated that the combination of graphene microelectrode arrays, super-resolution microscopy, and machine learning can be used to investigate disease progression in hippocampal neurons. 


Ernestine is currently on the Civil Service Fast Stream and has done postings in the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office and the Royal Navy.
